DESCRIPTION OF TRACKS

TRACK 1:  Introduction to Cultural Competency/Humility (Beginner)

This track is designed for those new to the area of cultural competency/humility.  Providing an introduction to cultual competency in the field of medicine, major topics in the area of cross-cultural health care include medical interpreters, cultural humility, and cultural immersion programs.  Cultural competency in risk management is presented with regard to physician practice matters, focusing in-depth on the importance of developing the requisite skills to communicate skillfully with a diverse patient population.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this track is to provide physicians, healthcare workers, and those with an interest in cross-cultural health care with an awareness and knowledge of cultural matters for those who work with diverse patient populations. 

 

TRACK 2:  Development, Assessment, and Evaluation of Cultural Competency Efforts (Advanced)

This track is ideal for those who have some familiarity/working knowledge of cultural competency/humility and would like to develop courses/initiatives/programs at their institutions or agencies.  An all-day workshop featuring program evaluation and assessment with community groups is available.  Assessment and evaluation of cultural competency efforts in various settings and for diverse constituencies is presented.  A validated instrument, the Tool for Assessing Cultural Competency Training (TACCT), to assess cultural competency at the medical student level is presented.

OBJECTIVE: 

The objective of this track is to enhance the assessment and evaluation skills of those who have a basic awareness and knowledge of cross-cultural health care issues.

 

TRACK 3:  Policy Issues Facing Cultural Competency/Humility Efforts (Expert)

This track considers participants as "leaders" and "experts" in the field of cultural competency/humility.  Cultural competency is discussed in the context of institutional and policy matters  A discussion of federal law (e.g. Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services or CLAS standards), requirements of accrediting bodies, and examples of state legislation in the area of cutlural competency is presented.

 

OBJECTIVE: 

To provide a forum for those well-versed in the area to enhance their awareness, knowledge and skills with regard to systemic factors that have an impact on care to diverse patient populations.  The goals of the participants for this track are to:

1) discuss and suggest changes to existing federal and state legislation and regulation guiding cultural competency/humility in health care;

2) outline strategies for amending/improving existing federal and state regulations impacting cross-cultural health care; and

3) specify how these strategies will be implemented and how their outcomes will be measured.
